A piece of editorial in this week's the Economist charts the rise and likely fall of London in modern times. The city dragged itself out of the drab rubbish filled streets of the 70s thanks to the Big Bang, transforming itself into Manhatten-on-Thames. This found its apogee in Blair's Cool Britannia and the Millenium Dome. Then in the world's eye we became multicultural Londonistan, oligarchal Londongrad and now with the collapse of the financial services industry, the place is stone broke and not particularly attractive any more to the foreigner. I am not sure I can face my home reverting to the city of my youth but I may just have to get used to it.
Reykjavik.... ouch. pickled herring as the food of the masses
